Week 13: Claim/Reason/Evidence/Analysis

I will present the following in class (posted here for those who will not be there--if you have questions, please email me):

This video was supposed to have a flow-chart explanation, but it did not copy over. Look on D2L under Unit 4 and look at the Synthesis assignment. Find one piece of evidence you have for your argument for each claim that you wish to share with the class and put that up for your peers here.

Make whatever evidence you have relevant to your claim through the analysis.

Now, create your own sort of flow-chart for your essay, or an outline of sorts. Imagine the the objections are me asking: "explain this quote/summary/paraphrase," or, "show me how this information strengthens your overall thesis." You might set yours up like this:

Claim #1 (should be the problem):
Reason/Evidence for #1:
Analysis of reason/evidence for #1:

Claim #2 (should be the cause):
Reason/Evidence for #2:
Analysis of reason/evidence for #2:

Claim #3 (should be the solution):
Reason/Evidence for #3:
Analysis of reason/evidence for #3:

Your job, and the job of your peers, is to raise their own objections to your reason/evidence and analysis. This is a good way to crowd source for your paper. Your paper, the blog, and the synthesis assignment are all to help you write your paper, and the claims should be from your thesis.

  1. Claim#1 Children in parts of Africa are being denounced of witchcraft and killed.
Reason\Evidence#1 These children that are denounced by churches make money their own selfish reasons by performing "so called exorcism" Or families that cant afford to feed their children.
Analysis of reason#1For their part, the families are often extremely poor, and sometimes even relieved to have one less mouth to feed. (www.huffingtonpost.com)
Claim#2 Social, Economic and political factors, as well as the changes that have occurred within witchcraft-related representations, that may have caused the phenomenon.
Reason Evidence for #2:When communities come under pressure, they look for scapegoats," he said. "It plays into traditional beliefs that someone is responsible for a negative change ... and children are defenseless." (unicef)
Analysis of reason\evidence #2 Churches feel competition to make more money
Claim#3 Introducing laws and educating these people.
Reason/Evidence: People will always have different beliefs but educating these people in many ways. like giving the child up for adoption or how wrong child abuse is.
Analysis of reason\evidence for #3 Natives of Africa don't know anything different but what they are told is right.

    1. First of all let me begin by saying that it is outrageous that this type of situation is going on. As for claim 1 are the churches killing for monetary gain? As for the families are there any other options (i.e. giving there children to someone in there community who has better means of feeding them). The source huffingtonpost.com is a source that I would not find as reliable as a scholarly essay because I find that news media is extremely bias in opinions and are often written based on feeling and not always facts. Under claim 2 what does it mean when communities are under pressure (i.e. political pressure, religious pressure). Are the churches responsible for identifying the scapegoat (because for analysis you state that it's for a monetary gain)? What is the source for claim three because making an assumption that African Natives are unable to distinguish right from wrong is hard to believe (are there political forces that control the way African Natives act).

    1. Claim #1 (should be the problem):
The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics reports, that in 2012 unemployment in America was 12.5 million; while, according to Outsaurus, the estimated numbers of jobs being outsourced is 10.5 million.

      Reason/Evidence for #1:
“Since 2000, the U.S. has lost millions of jobs due to outsourcing and insourcing. Those are euphemisms for exporting high-paying jobs to low-wage foreign countries, while importing an uneducated underclass willing to work for lower-than-U.S. wages without benefits.” (Schlafly)
“Since 2000, the U.S. manufacturing sector has lost nearly 25 percent of our total manufacturing workforce. Many of those jobs have gone to Communist China, where toys for the U.S. market are made in sweatshops by workers paid as little as 36 cents per hour, and many white-collar jobs have gone to India where telephone operators can be hired for $1 an hour.” (Schlafly)

      http://www.outsaurus.com/

      Analysis of reason/evidence for #1:
Americans lose jobs, homes, and dreams while, outsourcing numbers continue to rise. Leaving many American’s to suffer while foreign countries benefit.

Claim #2 (should be the cause):
Failure in American regulations, allow companies to avoid taxes and gain further income from outsourcing to other countries and disregarding the effects their choices have on American citizens and the nation.
      Reason/Evidence for #2:
“In 1952, the corporate tax generated 32.1% of all federal tax revenue. Today, the corporate tax accounts for 8.9%.” (Oak)
“Multinational Corporations like Microsoft and Hewlett Packard have more than 1.7 trillion in untaxed profits stashed as undistributed foreign earnings and keep at least 60% of their cash overseas.” (Oak)

      http://www.economicpopulist.org/content/corporate-tax-dodge-billions-avoided-taxes-while-america-goes-broke

      Analysis of reason/evidence for #2:
While corporations’ abuse tax laws, Americans are left with paying higher tax rates to make up the difference.

Claim #3 (should be the solution):
Implement legislation that limit the amount of jobs companies can outsource based on the percentage of unemployment in America. Doing so could protect jobs in America, while also providing opportunities for future generations.

      Reason/Evidence for #3:
“The United States welcomed China into the World Trade Organization in 2001 knowing that free-trade agreements with China would be unfair to America, and that even the expression “free trade,” as applied to China, is a fraud.” (Schlafly)
“The IRS should make greater use of its anti-abuse rules to stop offshore schemes and transactions that substantively violate the intense of the code, but are structured to appear to meet the most technical reading of, the tax code rules governing the taxations of offshore income.” (Oak)

      Analysis of reason/evidence for #3:
The leaders of America purposely lead the United States astray for own gain.

  5. Claim #1 (the problem): The fast food surge of the late 1950s has contributed to the increase in obesity in the United States.
Reason/Evidence for #1: Americans demanded a quick alternative to a traditionally cooked meal, to accommodate their busy schedules. As a result McDonald’s, KFC, A&W, Arby’s, Pizza Hut, and others rose to meet the demand. The increase in salty, fatty, and sugary foods led to an increase in American obesity and cardiovascular related disease.
Analysis of reason/evidence for #1: A diet rich in fast food supplied sugars, salts and fats are proving to lead to not only obesity among adults and children, but also contributes to diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and should be limited if not avoided.

    Harvard School of Public Healthhttp://www.hsph.harvard.edu/obesity-prevention-source/obesity-causes/diet-and-weight/

Claim #2 (the cause): The increase in processed foods.
Reason/Evidence for #2: The consumer demand has led food producers to manufacture food, increasing the complexity of it. High fructose corn syrup is just one ingredient. The result is cheaper, longer lasting, and more varied food items. The introduction of high fructose corn syrup is one way of making the food more calorie rich, but nutrient poor. All while contributing to caloric overconsumption.
Analysis of reason/evidence for #2: Because our stomachs have receptors in them, when we eat healthy foods (non-processed food items), our stomach fills in volume and caloric intake. The result let’s us know that we are full. However, in processed foods, the food is so dense with calories, our stomachs do not fill up to signal all of our receptors indicating that we are full. The result is an overeating to feel satisfied.

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition http://ajcn.nutrition.org/content/79/4/537.short

Claim #3 (the solution): Shortcomings in healthy food consumption education.
Reason/Evidence for #3: Those without knowledge or with antiquated food consumption practices are more likely to consume more unhealthy foods than those with the education. The indigent are more likely to consume unhealthy food options.
Analysis of reason/evidence for #3: Healthy food education can lead to obesity and other related health problems. The poor can also fall victim to obesity and other related food illness due to both monetary limitations and educational shortfalls.

    1. Can genetically altered foods such as chicken, fish, and corn also be tied into this as well? I mean chickens grow in weeks rather than months now, cows produce lots more milk, and corn grows just about anywhere. Could these changes perhaps have effects on humans as well after long time consumption? I think I heard about studies done to show that milk could also be causing women to hit puberty at younger ages.

A study published in 2001, led by Dr. Kaplowitz, showed that girls who developed sooner tended to have higher body-mass indexes. It also said that the findings of the early puberty study coincided with a rise in nationwide rates of obesity.

    2. I too have fallen victim to having the busy life style and eating fast food. Unfortunately it is easier to consume junk food rather than cooking. I feel more than education is needed its more of a life style change.. what are other alternatives to eating fast-food for a busy life style?

  6. Claim #1 (The Problem): It is difficult to determine if a person is unable to determine right from wrong when the commit a crime.
Reason/Evidence: The two main tests that the court system uses are the right-wrong test and the Irresistible Impulse test. Both of the tests used today are criticized by medical and legal professionals because of the fact that these tests are easily corrupted by a criminal who knows how to work the system and make it appear that they can’t make proper choices when in fact they have enough mental capability to lie to the investigators.
Analysis of Reason: There is not a solid way of determining if a suspect was able to understand right for wrong at the time of the crime.
    Source: law.umkc.edu

Claim #2 (The Cause): Ever since Roman times people have been ruled unaccountable for there acts by reason of insanity, this has to do with the compassion that people have toward those with mental disabilities.
Reason/Evidence: The insanity acquittal came about for the soul purpose of showing compassion and having recognition of the cruelty to inflict punishment on someone who did not know that the actions committed during a crime were wrong.
Analysis of Reason: As compassionate human beings we sometimes find it difficult to hold people accountable for there actions due to there mental handicaps.
    Source: law.umkc.edu

Claim #3 (The Solution): The solution in these types of situations are to make sure that there are unbiased professions present for the testimony against a criminal as well as public education for the jurors without altering there perception of the case.
Reason/Evidence: With better education comes a better understanding of the situation at hand and in the long run a suspect will get a proper sentencing. With unbiased professions testifying in a curt case you can be for certain that these professions truly believe that the suspect had no perception of right from wrong when the crime was committed.
Analysis of Reason: There will be better outcomes in insanity plea cases as well as a better chance for justice for the victim or the victim’s family.

  7. Claim #1 Florida's drug testing law for state assistance being reevaluated
Evidence for #1 Law was passed May of 2011 and as of right now on appeal in the Supreme Court
Analysis for #1 Drug testing is considered violation of privacy.

Claim #2 Drug testing law can prevent people from abusing the welfare system
Evidence #2 States are trying to make sure money is actually being given to those who need it for survival not drug use
Analysis for #2 Drug testing can verify that the recipients of state assistance are not using drugs

Claim #3 Law should be indicted in all states
Evidence #3 Other states are looking into adding this same law

  8. claim #1:(problem) People are so caught up in separating each other by the amount of money they make and by the vehicle they drive that they put themselves on a pedestal above other less fortunate.

(reason/Evidence)With a personal experience I was at work and I was helping out a lady who owned a Touareg which is one of Volkswagen's most expensive vehicles. As I helped her out the only thing she talked about was that she owned a Touareg and that she should be treated better and should have better service for her in general.

(Analyse of reason): People continue to let the rich and snobby people of this society walk all over them because they can't beat them.

claim #3:Its only after you've lost everything that you're free to do anything.

(ill finish this later i got to go and cant save this so ill post it)
