Week 12 - In class

Think about your audience and how you are going to approach that audience:

Goal: to connect with your reader and get your point across.

Defining the following are ways to reach your goal.

Define audience (me, class, someone who will receive this essay once it is complete)
Define purpose (what do you hope to accomplish with your paper? How will the sources you choose aid you in this purpose?)
Define method (how will you address your audience to achieve your purpose? Think about rhetoric: logos, pathos, ethos; what kind of combination would best suit your purpose? What kind of research will support your method? Will you use data tables, anecdotes--personal stories, news reports, events--where your opinion has occurred been observed and recorded, expert opinion, studies, the constitution or laws, etc.)

Last: How will you find sources that will work together in order to reach your goal?

  1. My audience would be anyone that is interested in the problem of obesity in America but mostly just my class mates. I hope to open my reader’s eyes to the problem of obesity in America and the role the government plays in it. There have been a lot of studies on obesity so I have many sources to include government sites. I am planning to us ethos and logos. I also plan on using news reports, studies, and expert opinion.

    1. You may consider looking into information from government sources such as the FDA, the USDA, and the National Action Against Obesity. Due to obesity being a very, forgive the pun, large problem in the USA, there are numerous sites to pull from. Good luck!!

  2. My audience is other professionals in the field of early childhood education, as well as my classmates and teacher. With my paper I hope to make others realize that effects poverty has on a young child in the first five years of life. My sources will provide me with the actual statistic that link together poverty and at risk children. My source will help me provide information to my audience about my topic. My research will provide me with school readiness that early intervention can provide for young children that are neglected in any way shape or form. I will use a large combination of pathos and logos to attract, obtain, and convince my audience. I will use personal stories, researched based evidence, and a fair argument of what the outcome is if you do and what the outcome is if you don’t. I plan on find my sources in academic journals like EPSCO.

  4. My essay, addressing conflicts of interests in the USDA hierarchy, will primarily be focused on enlightening the student body and professor on the aforementioned issue. Ultimately, the audience could be used to inform a greater audience, but at the moment, I have no intention of doing so.
The overarching purpose of the essay is to simply inform readers of the conflict of interest that exists between some food businesses and the some members of the regulatory government body, the United States Department of Agriculture. The hope is that the audience will become more aware of any and all known relationships and will 1). Demand change and, 2). Become more aware consumers.
My method of addressing the audience will be fairly direct in highlighting the issue, but diplomatic and to some extent, none accusatory in the delivery of facts and related figures. I will use both pathos and logos to buttress my argument and convince my audience of the issue at hand. I intend to use quotes, legal proceedings, publicly accessible business transactions, etc., to illustrate a link between senior members of the USDA and food companies, and pathos to convince readers that such relationships could conflict with healthy dietary guidelines and may ultimately jeopardize American food consumption practices. Furthermore, I will include news reports that highlight inappropriate business relationships, studies, and alike.
To better synthesize my sources, I will concentrate on a few common, but mutually supporting themes; conflicts of interest within the USDA and American food producers. To do so, I will likely concentrate on internet searches as a place to base all of my research of supporting topics.

  5. I am having a hard time with the topic I had picked, which was Breed-Specific Legislation, and am now possibly switching to American Outsourcing. Reason being the audience I am trying to reach is everybody from peers to the average citizen. This topic has been very controversial and is a very current problem. I want to reach this audience because I feel it affects our economy in the United States. I want to find more credible information through research to educate others and myself on why outsourcing has negatively affected our society; thus, why I feel we need to find a way to limit outsourcing to create a more stable economy. I really want to try to stick to using logos and ethos as my form of rhetoric trying to convince my audience how limiting outsourcing could greatly strengthen our economy. I would like to find research with expert opinion making a connection to my audience through logos and ethos making my solution more convincing.

    1. Something you might look into is finding out how many jobs are outsourced compared to how many Americans are jobless. I'm guessing the %'s are pretty close to each other. Also might look into how much companies avoid paying in taxes when they outsource and how these "laws" almost push companies into wanting to outsource.

    2. The DOD, the DOS and the Intelligence Community have used outsourcing (contracting essentially), following the attacks on September 11th and invasion of Iraq. Why? Too few people to fill critical areas of specialization. I would recommend looking into the the DOS, DOD and the IC for info, all three did and still use contractors heavily. If Mrs. Taylor will allow it, you can interview me or just write things down, as I have been and still am, heavily involved for the DOD and IC.

  6. Audience anyone who is interested in how poverty and religion affects children and families in a negative aspect .
My purpose is to inform the audience of the horrors that are happening in many parts of Africa due to ignorance, poverty and religion. And why this calls for a solution. That may not get rid of the problem completely. But give a new perspective on a solution
My Method will be using logos in way of giving my audience a look into a child's life that had been accused of witchcraft and have either been punished by unthinkable ways or killed. I will also be using pathos to appeal to my reader on how wrong this is and in the united states this would never happen because it is child abuse.
The research that will be done will be personal stories from children that have been experienced this first hand. Charities that are working with these abused children. As well as studies done by UNICEF over time.

  7. I wish to enlighten, humans, aliens, dogs, cats, and anyone who wishes to listen in the unknown universe, to the horrors and truths behind the treatment and over-all acceptance of those with mental illness. Examples of my research – but not limited to – would be medical history and personal stories. I hope to find information to support my thesis, while also enlightening the readers and myself to new truths.
Personal stories would be like, those who personally experienced events or those who witnessed and documented such events. I wish to expose my readers to aspects of life they may or may not have knowledge of.
Researching medial history, I hope to demonstrate the barbaric approach science has taken in the past and hope to show improvements. To show how much these aspects have changed in good and bad ways and where they continue to succeed or fail.

    1. I do not know a huge amount on the treatment of mental ill patients, however, you mentioned the word "barbaric." You may look to the experiments and killings in Europe during WWII. Certainly the atrocities of the SS and alike are well documented. In a lighter note, Bellveau hospital in NYC has a long history of treating the mentally ill, and some of their history isn't the best either.

  8. In my paper on the FDA’s approval system for releasing a medication for patient consumption, I will be focusing on an audience of any patient who wants to know the steps and the time involved for the FDA to approve a medication. My purpose is to convince consumers that the FDA takes the proper steps in approving a drug for patient consumption in a safe and timely manner. The FDA website and medical journals are very helpful in finding the information I need to explain the FDA’s process. The methods I will be using are logos and pathos, because I will be using logic/intellect to gain the trust of my audience. I will be using studies, news reports, and maybe one data table that will show the amount of time progress that has been made by the FDA to approve drugs.

  9. The reason for this paper is to reach and approach administrators and counselors in elementary, middle and high schools to create a stepping stone for social rights for minors, and to reach those students about the causes and the effects of bullying. The way I will address this topic is by using events and physiological data to prove and get through to my audience. I am going to use pathos and logos to make them genuinely understand how massive and destructive this problem is. The kind of research I am going to present by using present and past news cast statements, and stories. Then I am going to research data on .edu and .gov for statics and charts to reach my conclusion.

    1. Not very long ago I remember seeing a special on TV about a girl who committed suicide after being bullied at high school. And how many students were being convicted of crimes in the courts over it. I'm not sure if that is something that would assist in the over all goal of your paper. I can also interview with you if you would like as I was very much bullied during grade school for having a speech problem and growing up in a very poor household. If you were looking for some personal stories.

  10. The audience of my paper is anyone who uses social media networks, such as twitter, facebook, etc., especially for a news source. My purpose is to educate people of the problems misinformation can bring about and what can be done to prevent the chance of being effected by misinformation through these networks. I don't have any definite sources yet so attempting to explain how these would aid my paper would be futile.
I will attempt to use news reports, statistics, laws and events that have occured in situations related to misinformation through social networks to educate the reader of the problem, current steps to prevent the problem, and what else could be done in the future to further prevent these problems. I will more than likely be using all three methods (logos, pathos, ethos) in my paper. I will use google to find my sources.

  11. The audience of my paper is a combination of law makers and citizens alike. I chose the topic of mental disabilities and how it affects the criminal justice system to teach people that there are criminals out there that use this an excuse to get out of being punished for there crimes. I use and cite from sources such as criminal cases in the past and how the plea of insanity prevented victims and families from getting the justice that they truly deserve. I believe that emotions trump logic when it comes to this topic and I find that when emotions are brought in on a criminal case it strongly affects the outcome.

    1. There has been some good news reports from some of the recent shootings in Colorado; as well as, expert opinions from some psychologists that are against some of the cases in the past being ruled with psychological disabilities favoring the guilty's outcome.

  12. My audience is anyone who feels that their contained to gentrification in the work place and how it can cause you to change emotionally and mentally. It happens all the time when people move up in their job and forget who they really are because they now have changed their "class" and are now being ran by their job. kinda like in Fight club when Tyler Durdan states that before long the things you own start owning you.
